Perry Hall Mansion Friends Plant Tree, Clean Up

Members of the Perry Hall community gathered to commemorate both Earth Day and Arbor Day at the historic Perry Hall Mansion. The highlight of the event was the planting of a redbud tree, donated by State Sen. Kathy Klausmeier. Baltimore County Councilman David Marks and State Del. John Cluster were also on hand for this spring celebration and volunteer activity.

!!! CANCELLED !!! Earth Day 2012

*** Given that the current weather forecast for the scheduled day of this event presently indicates rain for much of the day on Sunday, the Friends have arranged for an alternate rain-date.  The event will be re-scheduled for Sunday, April the 29th, starting at 1pm at the Perry Hall Mansion. ****

Earth Day 2012

In honor of Earth Day 2012, on Sunday, April 22, the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion will host a special community service opportunity for all interested volunteers.

Starting at 1 p.m. and continuing until 6 p.m., Friends members will work side by side with volunteers to conduct a comprehensive spring cleaning of the 4-acre grounds surrounding the historic Perry Hall Mansion at 3930 Perry Hall Rd. They plan to collect brush and debris, prune and trim shrubs and trees and cut the grass.

A highlight of the event will be a special tree planting ceremony, in commemoration of both Earth Day and Arbor Day, which will fall on April 27. Lunch and light refreshments will be available for all attendees, in addition to raffle prizes and other activities.

Interested volunteers are encouraged to RSVP to Jeff Smith, president of the Friends, at jeffwsmith@verizon.net. Volunteers may bring their own gloves and/or gardening tools.

This past year we were able to again hold our annual holiday event in the Perry Hall Mansion. After permission from Baltimore County was granted, permits attained and a few visits and compliance with the fire marshal, we were pleased to open the house and show it off. While we are not able to open the house for community public or private use we are hopeful that by the end of this year we will be able to gain the rights to use and operate in the building and its grounds. After permissions are granted we will begin the transformation of the interior main rooms to allow for proper and safe use of the building. We continue to be optimistic that we will be able to use this local landmark to enhance our community and we continue to move forward with promoting the Mansion and our local history. Look for the mansion store items and a number of new items featured at local craft fairs throughout the year including this spring at The Perry Hall Community Hall Craft Show off of Gerst Road March / April 2012 & Among Friends Craft Show at Odd Fellows Hall on Bradshaw Rd near Kingsville March 23-25. As always, we thank you for your continued support, we encourage you to get involved, help with events, attend meetings, join a committee, make a donation, and look forward to new opportunities in the upcoming year.

The Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion Third Annual Holiday Reception

View more images here

During the first Sunday in December, about twenty volunteers from the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion coordinated the first ever holiday tour and reception featuring this historic residence.  Perry Hall Mansion, originally constructed in 1775, was acquired by Baltimore County in 2001, and is supervised by the Department of Recreation and Parks.  The Friends of Perry Hall Mansion, with over 175 members, work collaboratively with the County to guide the restoration and adaptive re-use of this unique property.

The tour was jointly sponsored by the Friends of Jerusalem Mills, and attracted over 135 guests.  Immediately following the tour, the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion welcomed another 150 guests to a holiday reception, featuring musical performances, period furnishings and holiday décor, as well as a visit from Santa Claus.  Special guests included Sen. Kathy Klausmeier and Del. Joe Boteler, who both represent Baltimore County’s 8th legislative district, as well as Mr. Steve Verch, the chair of the County Parks Board.  This day of activity was the first time that visitors could see the completed first phase of interior renovations of Perry Hall Mansion.  This work consisted of the replacement of the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, as well as a general stabilization of the interior of the building.  It is hoped that cosmetic renovations and interior decorating can commence sometime during 2010.

2008

Thus far in 2008, there has been a great deal of momentum associated with the historic residence of Perry Hall founder Harry Dorsey Gough. For instance, the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion – an organization that exists so as to manage and maintain this historic property – have coordinated both exterior and interior maintenance projects. The exterior clean-up resulted in the removal of over 3 tons of brush and yard waste!

On other fronts, the Friends have successfully begun the first phase of an archaeological exploration of the Mansion and grounds. The Friends have entered into a partnership with local historic preservationist Mr. William Knauer, who is presently engaged in a magnetometer sweep of the approximately four acres of property surrounding the historic mansion. This surface sweep is to determine the areas where specific artifacts appear to be clustered. A number of historically significant finds have already been made, and have been -- and will continue to be -- on display at various community events.

In addition, the Friends had a strong presence at this summer's Perry Hall Town Fair. Original Mansion occupants Harry Dorsey and Prudence Gough (or at least re-enactors dressed for the part) shared the wonderful legacy of this historic home with fair attendees. Also, a charity raffle was held, with the prize being a print of one of artist Francis Guy's 1803 paintings of the Mansion.

Lastly, after completing extensive consultations with Baltimore County Government, the Friends are pleased to announce that the first phase of the interior renovation of the Mansion is scheduled to begin. Work to be done includes the complete replacement of all electrical wiring, plumbing and fixtures, and the installation of a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.
